Jim was a careless boy. He hung the gardener’s basket on a nail on the wall, and for days forgot all about it. Then the gardener missed him, and sent Jim to look for him. When he returned without it, Gardner was furious.
“Please, sir,” said Jem, “the basket hangs adequately on the wall, but there is a nest in it, and a blackbird sitting on it, and I had no heart to hurt it.”
“That’s right, Jim,” said the gardener, laughing. “I think, we will let little mother have a rent-free house for a while.”
After a while, the young were hatched – four of them. Finally, their feathers have appeared, and it’s time for their first flying lesson.
“We’ll start tomorrow,” said the mother bird, and the children cried out for joy. They made such a noise, in fact, that the youngest was pushed close to the edge of the nest, and before the parents even noticed, the poor moths fell to the floor!
In an instant the big gray Persian cat basking in the sun jumped up on the grass, and ran towards the poor chirping bird. The Father Blackbeards cried so loudly in their grief that the gardener and Jim stopped digging. Jim picked up the frightened little creature and gently carried it back to the nest.
And Mistress Pussy was driven away in disgrace, and banished from the garden until all the little Blackbirds flew away forever.
“After all,” said Father Blackbeard to his wife that evening, “it was fortunate that we took this house. We had never had such a large and beautiful house, and the gardener and Jim were very good neighbours.”
And all the birds on the farm, even to the old turkey, agreed that Jim was the kindest kind of boy. Henry Altmus Company.
Listen to Yellow Beaky!
(This is the other name for Blackbeard).
Look at his sparkling eyes so cheeky!
(Mr. Insolence is tame.)
He’s singing to Miranda
(Who is recovering from mumps:)
Come and play on the porch,
And forget those blocks!
Sing the Blackbirds song,
All but two escaped.
It has a yellow beak and bright eyes
I stayed to sing for you.”
