Once the Tyne was so swollen that it overflowed its banks and greatly damaged the valley through which it flows into the North Sea. Buildings were swept away, and all kinds of things were washed away by the flood. Stacks of hay, corn, pieces of furniture and even animals were carried from the fields by the stream. A swan was seen sailing a long distance, and people on the bank noticed that a black spot had appeared on its snow-white plumage. When the bird approached, everyone was amazed to see that the black object was a living mouse, which had taken refuge on the back of the swan.
The wise four-legged as well as the friendly onlookers cheered as they both reached the ground safely, and the mouse ran off to find a new home. Henry Altemus Corporation.
